Abstract:

In this talk I will discuss recent developments and new trends in the study of discrete subgroups of semisimple Lie groups.
In the 60’s and 70’s Mostow and Margulis established various fantastic rigidity results for discrete subgroups of Lie groups. Since then rigidity became the paradigm when studying discrete subgroups of semisimple Lie groups, in particular for Lie groups of higher rank, such as SL(n,R) for n>2.
In recent years there has been a bit of a paradigm shift due to the discovery of rich classes of discrete subgroups in semisimple Lie groups of higher rank, which are not rigid. I will discuss some of the developments as well as further challenges.
