Abstract:  According to the section conjecture, formulated by Grothendieck in 1983, rational points of smooth hyperbolic curves over number fields should admit a purely group-theoretic description, in terms of the fundamental group of the corresponding Riemann surface and of the absolute Galois group of the number field.  I will discuss the status of the conjecture, with an emphasis on recent progress towards its birational version.
