Semantic Annotation for Digital Humanities
The HCC Research Group investigates how semantic annotations can enrich scholars' knowledge creation work. Our semantic annotation software neonion enables scholars (and other users) to annotate semantic concepts in text documents, link annotated concepts to existing linked-data entities, for example from Wikidata, and finally extend their knowledge by integrating relevant, additional knowledge from these external sources.
With the help of neonion as a research environment and its users, we want to understand the scholarly knowledge creation process and develop an easy to use annotation software that combines human and machine intelligence in the most fruitful way. Our research focuses on two main areas: how users (scholars) interact with the software and how they can benefit from semantic technologies without presupposed knowledge about the involved technologies. We also investigate collaborative work using the semantic annotations. Through the semantic vocabulary, the scholars' annotation can also easily be shared and thus support collaborative work. neonion is developed using a user-centered design approach. This allows us to develop our tool closely with the prospective users and to reply to their needs directly.
