Abstract: We rely on the Internet as a ubiquitous communications network for critical functions ranging from financial transactions to emergency and crisis alerts. Organizational, policy, and technical efforts have been made to enable users to assess the trustworthiness of the hosts with which they communicate. In the first part of this paper, we discuss the current host-based approach to trustworthy communication over the Web, its limitations, and introduce Information-Centric Networking (ICN) as an alternative. And in the second part, we present our findings on trust in the context of digital communication and specifically on the Web, evaluate relevant technical and non-technical measures that are used to enforce trust relationships, and finally propose a robust data-oriented solution based on ICN that decouples trust from Internet hosts in both temporal and spatial dimensions.
