Abstract: In this talk I will review how surgery theory, and in particular the surgery exact sequence, reduces certain problems in the classification of manifolds to computing a homomorphism between geometrically defined bordism groups and algebraically defined groups of quadratic forms; the L-groups. If the L-groups are known one sees that interesting manifolds are bound to appear it is not clear in which dimension they will show up.
In this setting I will review exotic spheres, the Kervaire invariant problem and a generalisation and I will briefly mention briefly discuss the Novikov Conjecture and the Borel Conjecture.
