Digital typefaces are a ubiquitous application of computer graphics, but are comparatively underrepresented in computer graphics research. This talk provides a brief introduction to the basic principles, points out directions for research, and illustrates the author’s current projects, in particular the semiautomatic design of ambigrams (in this case, words whose lettering is point symmetric) and the automated clustering of computer fonts according to their visual properties.
